Resumes are an essential part of the job-hunting process. Before you can even get an interview, employers ask for resumes to gauge which candidate is most qualified for the role. Qualifications aside, there are other ways to make your resume stand out from the rest of the applicants. We spoke to 3 MISA seniors who have been through their fair share of interviews, and they shared some advice on how to make a resume more memorable. These resume tips can help you bolster your resume in a way that may help you land your dream role!

MISA’s VP of Marketing Nikhil Kothavale says:

“Avoid making your resume too long. Anything over 1 page long will not be accepted by most recruiters or hiring managers. A great way to get your resume noticed is to tailor it to the specific job you are applying for. This can be done by looking for keywords within the job description.”

MISA Senior Alex Belarmino says:

“One of the most important parts about your resume is that it is filled from top to bottom; avoid white space. Try to fill up the spaces in your resume with information about yourself by including relevant classes you took, projects, your interests outside of school, and even community service you may have done in the past. The most important part of a resume is your work experience. I always try to have 3 to 4 bullet points describing what each of my work experience roles entailed, especially for jobs that correlate to the position I’m applying to. When talking about your work experience, make sure you describe the results you achieved and the value you brought to your company and try to stay away from surface-level descriptions.”

Graduating Senior Eiman Chaudhry says:

“Avoid having a basic Microsoft Word resume, it is dry to the eye and will not stick out to future employers. If you have any school projects on your resume, make sure you are able to intricately explain them during an interview. It is very common for recruiters to ask you about specific positions or skills that are listed on your resume, so make sure to be familiar with all of them in order to avoid being caught off guard.”

These tips from MISA’s graduating seniors are an excellent way to make your resume stand out from the rest of the applicants. Most of them are minor changes that do not take a lot of time. Tailoring your resume for the role you are applying to, including relevant school projects on your resume, and not using a default resume template are all effective and simple ways to make your resume better. These are simple ways that you can immediately make an impact on your resume and stand out amongst competitors.
